LVHHN Conducts Go Red for Women Day Promotion to Raise Awareness

(August 25, 2006)

WHAT:
As part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women national observance on Friday, Feb. 3, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN) will be conducting a Heart Help for Women/Go Red for Women promotion at its three hospital sites in Allentown and Bethlehem (see details below).

Gerald Pytlewski, M.D., LVHHN cardiologist with the Heart Care Group, PC says a new report shows the importance of campaigns like Go Red for Women in preventing cardiovascular deaths among women. “Research findings published in medical literature just this week indicate that women are more likely than men to have a hidden type of coronary disease,” Dr. Pytlewski says. “They show that more predominantly in women than in men, the heart muscle can be starved for oxygen even though the coronary arteries appear clear with no blockages on an X-ray.” Dr. Pytlewski says the findings further stress the need to take a close look at women with cardiovascular disease symptoms, a family history and severe risk factors including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and lifestyle habits like diet, exercise and smoking.

For a $5 donation to benefit the LVHHN Heart Walk Team in support of the American Heart Association on Sept. 17, 2006, Go Red for Women contributors will receive:
  • Heart Help for Women blinking reflector light
  • Go Red for Women red rubber bracelet
  • Information about LVHHN’s Heart Help for Women program
  • Chance to win raffle prizes
Raffle prizes include: $100 gift certificate for dinner in the Colonnade Steak House in the Historic Hotel Bethlehem; gift certificate for a one night stay at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. Participants also get to spin the risk factor wheel for prizes if they can answer questions about the risk factors of heart disease.

BACKGROUND:
Heart disease is the nation’s leading killer of both women and men. According to the American Heart Association slightly more women than men die from cardiovascular disease each year—more than 480,000 of them. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s nationwide movement to empower women with the knowledge and tools they need to take positive action to reduce their risks of heart disease and stroke and to protect their health.

LVHHN’s Heart Help for Women initiative is designed to educate Lehigh Valley women and their loved ones about women’s risk factors for heart disease; how to lower their risks; the warning signs of a heart attack; what to do if they experience symptoms; and the latest information about heart attack prevention and treatment.
